Gut Microbiota

Gut microbiota refers to the entire population of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, parasites and non-pathogenic fungi) that live in our gastro-intestinal tract.

Gut Microbiota: what it is

Gut microbiota refers to the entire population of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, parasites and non-pathogenic fungi) that live in our gastro-intestinal tract. Different microbiota co-habit in our body, for instance, the skin or mouth microbiota. The gut microbiota is the most important of them all: it weights approximately 2 Kg and has a number of cells from 2 to 10 times greater than those constituting our body.

+

The microbiota is an ecosystem that forms at birth and, just like fingerprints, is unique to each individual.

The presence of micro-organisms in our intestine has been known for over a century, and a close relationship between our body and this “flora” was immediately hypothesized, even though testing techniques did not provide a satisfactory analysis until a short time ago.

Recent developments in genetic testing techniques now make it possible to conduct detailed microbiota testing, thus highlighting:

  • the interaction between the microbiota and our body
  • the interactions between the different microorganisms that are present
  • how gut microbiota influences our health

Gut Microbiota: its function

Nowadays, the fundamental role of gut microbiota in the digestive, metabolic, immune and neurological functions has been officially recognized. It follows that a dysbiosis, which is an alteration in the balance of the microbiota, could be responsible for a number of diseases.

+

Microbiota is useful to our body and plays an important role in ensuring the proper functioning of our digestive system, and of our immune system, in case of metabolic dysfunctions and inflammatory phenomena.

  • Fermentation and digestion of food residues that cannot be digested
  • Assimilation of food thanks to the presence of enzymes that are not present in our body
  • Synthesis of some vitamins (K, B12, B8 ...)
  • Absorption of fatty acids, calcium, magnesium …
  • A fundamental role in the intestinal immune system
  • Regulation of intestinal inflammatory phenomena
Un microbiota sano ed equilibrato è la condizione di base per mantenere un buono stato di salute.
